Update: July 11, 2024, 11:49 a.m.: Shelley Duvall, the actress whose piercing scream punctuated many of the horrors of Stanley Kubrick's 1980 movie “The Shining,” has died, according to reports citing family.
Duvall, 75, died in her sleep over the weekend in Texas, her agent confirmed to _The New York Times_. A cause of death has not been released.
Duvall began her career as a model before transitioning to acting in the early 1970s. She quickly became a favorite of director Robert Altman, who cast her in several of his films, including “McCabe & Mrs. Miller” (1971), “Thieves Like Us” (1974), and “Nashville” (1975).
Duvall's most famous role came in 1980 when she starred as Wendy Torrance in “The Shining.” Her performance as the terrified wife of Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is considered one of the most iconic in horror film history.
Duvall continued to act throughout the 1980s and 1990s, but her career began to decline in the 2000s. She made occasional appearances in films and television shows, but she largely retreated from public life.
